About Smoking Gun (and the t-shirt)
:
Smoking Gun TV first appeared on the Court TV channel, in 2003, and ended its run there, in 2004. This promotional use only, ringer style t-shirt, acquired then, was produced, in limited quantity, for the show’s opening (it was never ‘for sale’).
The Smoking Gun debuted on August 20th of that year, hosted by CBS’s own Mo Rocca, then, senior political correspondent for Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart".
Smoking Gun TV featured a compilation of stories echoing the Smoking Gun website's rich parade of mug shots, backstage riders, reality TV miscreants, and celebrity scandals. And, of course, examinations of wretched criminals like Coolerhead and the teenage steak thief.
The website was founded in 1997, by William Bastone, his wife, Barbara Glauber (a graphic designer), and Daniel Green, a freelance journalist, formerly of The Village Voice. Most of The Smoking Gun's content was acquired through Freedom of Information Act requests to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, and from public records such as court documents.
The cable network truTV (formerly Court TV), purchased The Smoking Gun, as well as the website Crime Library, in 2000.
A series of the same name premiered on Court TV in 2005, which featured some of the site's stories and assorted sketch humor, using string puppets. This series was later moved to and shown on Adult Swim.
